Pause, Reschedule, Retire: Managing a Link After You've Shared It

The Link You Share Should Never Have to Change

Every protected link on ShieldmyLinks lives at a fixed address: shieldmylinks.com/c/{code}, or its thislink.bio alias. That's deliberate. Once you've put a link in a newsletter, a printed flyer, or a pinned social post, you can't take it back — so everything you might need to change later has to happen behind the link, not to it.

The Kill Switch: Pause

Every link has a Pause / Resume button. Pausing takes effect immediately — the next click sees "Link Unavailable" instead of the destination — and it's fully reversible. Resume brings it straight back, with its click history, its human/blocked counts, and every gate setting untouched.

When to reach for it:

• A link leaked somewhere you didn't intend before you were ready
• Between two uses of the same recurring link (a weekly meeting, a repeating event)
• While you investigate a spike in blocked attempts, without deleting anything

Deleting a link throws away its whole history. Pausing doesn't.

Editing Without Re-Issuing

Open any link's Edit modal and you can change the destination URL, the captcha type, the color scheme, the geo rule, and every access-control setting covered in our gate rundown — all without generating a new short code. People who already have the link keep using the exact same URL; what happens after they click is what changes.

That matters most for the time-based settings:

• Move a deadline. Extend expires_at and a link that was about to close stays open — no need to tell everyone the URL changed.
• Reschedule an opening. Update available_from if a launch slips a day. Visitors who check early just see an updated countdown.
• Raise a cap. Increase max_visits if you decide to open up more seats after the fact.

Watching Capacity Fill Up

If a link has a visit limit set, the dashboard shows it as a live badge — successful visits over the cap, e.g. 37/40 — right on the link card, no need to open Stats to check. Once it hits the cap, the link closes itself automatically; nobody has to be watching at the exact moment it fills.

At-a-Glance Status

Every link card carries a small set of badges so you can tell what's active without opening anything:

• Paused — the kill switch is on
• Password — a password gate is set
• A time badge — "Opens {date}", "Until {date}", "Open since {date}", or "Expired," whichever currently applies
• A capacity badge — current visits over the limit, when one is set
• A geo badge — which rule profile is assigned, allow or block

Scanning a dashboard of a dozen links tells you at a glance which ones are live, which are scheduled, and which are quietly full.

The Common Thread

None of this requires touching the URL people already have. Pause, reschedule, raise a cap, swap a password, retarget the destination entirely — the address stays fixed, and everything that determines what happens when someone clicks it lives on our side, changeable at any time from the dashboard.
